It's my son now too.
As an autism behavior resource teacher I travel to a lot of schools. And my cell phone doesn't always work in all of them.
So today I missed the call from my son's school nurse that he had vomited and needed to be picked up.
My husband didn't miss his call so he got him. And took him home.
Me - I was busy at work and didn't even notice the phone message until 4 hours later. By the time I had gotten home he had also started a fever. He's now napping after being given some Tylenol.
I feel like I won The Worst Mother Of The Year Award today.

Oh, no! This could happen to anyone. And he didn't have to stay at school. Your husband was able to get him. Yay for teamwork! I imagine you have been the hero many times. Don't mark this down as a parenting failure, mark it down as a making-your-husband-feel-completely-heroic success!
I hope he feels better soon.
If it makes you feel better, I missed the call over the summer when Mimi fell down on a camp field trip and cut open her chin. She needed 6 stitches. Luckily her dad was able to drive rapidly from his office to pick her up. Where was I, you ask? At the gym. At least you were actually at work! ;-)
But I really do love Stimey's take on this. Make the dad the hero.
my kid broke his hand. at preschool. While I was getting a manicure. Had I not gotten the manicure and picked him up earlier, would not happened.
I think I win.
I'm sure your son is better by now, but guilt can linger.
The school my boys go to must have walls of lead or something (God forbid!) there is absolutely no cell reception there, so there's no way you could have known and it sounds like your schedule would make it hard for you to be tracked down by other means.
And, as Stimey said at least your boy didn't suffer at his school.
